Robert Lighthizer approved as United States trade representative

He also has represented the United States at meetings of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and meetings related to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (the precursor to the World Trade Organization).

Guajardo said talk of the United States preparing to leave NAFTA was likely part of a strategy to press Congress to approve Trump's pick for US trade representative.

If the administration triggers the consultation period next week, NAFTA negotiations with Canada and Mexico could start in August at the earliest.

If the United States were to withdraw from NAFTA, it would not necessarily mean the end of the trade deal. John McCain (Ariz.) and Ben Sasse (Neb.).

As a lawyer, Lighthizer has always been critical of China's steel dumping. But in spite of the potential legal landfalls, the Senate decided that it was high time to install the chief US trade representative, and confirmed Lighthizer by a landslide.

Under Lighthizer, Wolff says, "trade policy is going to get a lot more muscular".
