A Letter To A Grieving Mom On Mother's Day

It is not about flowers, cards, and meals out. In fact, they count on it.

Within a few years of Mother's Day gaining national status, however, she was upset at the way the day had become commercialized.

Retailers anticipate a record $23.6 billion in sales, about 10 percent above last year's spending. Instead, smile and remember that Ground Hogs are people too! She was so effective in promoting the idea that President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day an official US holiday in 1914.

Plainfield, I hope you'll take a moment to say thank you to the women in your life who love you in that special way mothers do. I have a wonderful mother-in-law, Linda, and I am lucky enough to have my Grandma Sidusky here with the family as well.

How did God make Mothers?

It's the day we honor moms. Mothers are in unique situations: some don't have husbands, others live with female partners, some are in conventional family structures, others are raising their children with the help of the "village", some are stay-at-home moms, others go to work, etc. Mothers also have unique skill sets and challenges.

The first modern Mother's Day observances were organized in Grafton, West Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by social activist Anna Jarvis on May 10, 1908, although a previous commemoration had been held in Henderson, Kentucky in April 1887 by Mary Towles Sasseen. She taught me how to quilt, and I love it. I'm more likely to keep score of these debts than any mother I've observed.

"I hate the way the holiday makes all non-mothers, and the daughters of dead mothers, and the mothers of dead or severely damaged children, feel the deepest kind of grief and failure", she wrote. Yes my friends that vision is the way many children perceive the ideal mother! She's also the one who celebrates your achievements.
