ANDER HERRERA has turned down a reunion with new Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde by committing his future to Manchester United.

But, after finishing 8th in La Liga last season Valverde has chose to take charge of former club Barcelona, and he now has some big boots to fill, with the club winning nine trophies in the space of just three seasons under Enrique, including that stunning treble in his debut campaign.

The 53-year-old has managed across Europe and Spain but is now set for his toughest managerial gig. He has had two spells as coach at both Athletic Club Bilbao and Greek team Olympicacos as well as having coached at Espanyol, Villarreal and Valencia.

"Valverde has the knowledge and experience we were looking for and he loves youth football".

The club will hold a board meeting at 1pm, and a press conference has been called with president Josep Bartomeu expected to reveal the identity of the club's next coach.

Immediately after his 1997 retirement, he moved back to Athletic as a youth-team coach, eventually becoming first-team boss in the 2003-04 season.

According to Spanish daily AS (h/t Daily Star's Joel Watson), incoming Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is determined to add Herrera to his squad in an attempt to introduce some steel to his midfield.

The longtime Athletic Bilbao manager is replacing Luis Enrique, who ended his three-year stint after winning the Copa del Rey on Saturday.

"We also beat Southampton in the League Cup final, it was an unbelievable game, and it was great to win in the last few minutes".

Barca finished second in La Liga behind arch rival Real Madrid and exited the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage after being outclassed by Juventus.

"He said he is very excited and very happy, that it's a great challenge to come in as head coach of Barca". They beat Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup.

Jon Aspiazu, who has worked with Valverde for 15 years, arrives as his assistant coach, and there will be more additions to the backroom after the majority of Luis Enrique's staff left for Celta Vigo.
