It was originally supposed to be out earlier this year, but was hit with delays that have left fans wondering just when we would see the Blue Wonder again.

As evidenced in the latest clip, Sonic Mania will allow fans to "run, fly, climb (and glide, and punch, too)" while playing through completely updated classic levels and taking on all-new bosses. It will come to the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC on August 15, 2017.

The game will let players take the role of Sonic, Knuckles or Tails as they pursue Dr. Eggman. The trailer was released to announce that digital pre-orders for the game are now available, though the announcement of the release date is better still. It is a throwback to classic Sonic, but with 60 FPS gameplay and improved physics.

The game was put into development by Christian Whitehead, who previously worked on the Sonic CD revival for PC, mobile and consoles, as well as Headcannon and PagodaWest, working alongside Sega. Discover a myriad of never-before-seen hidden paths and secrets. "A Collector's Edition that includes a download code, a 12" Sonic statue, and a replica Genesis cartridge is still available from most retailers.

Digital pre-orders are 10 per cent off, bringing the price to £13.49 / $17.99. Thankfully, one of Sega's past pieces of gameplay footage focuses on Knuckles making a run through the updated version of the Flying Battery Zone, giving a good look at the character's capabilities in the new game. To celebrate the announcement, we're treated to a brand-new trailer.
