The agreement, which 195 nations signed in December 2015, set a global goal to keep the planet from warming to a level that scientists say could keep the planet from launching into a tailspin of irreversible consequences.

The 61 mayors who previously pledged to ignore President Donald Trump's climate change policies have upped their commitment after he announced his intent to withdraw the us from the Paris climate accord: At least 61 cities are adopting the historic agreement themselves.

"In following through on his promise, President Trump is supporting America's uncompromising values, saving coal jobs, and promoting low-priced, reliable electricity for Americans and the rest of the World", chief executive Robert Murray said in a statement. For more: Here's what is in the accord, and here's how the decision could affect the coal industry, the climate, USA global leadership, Trump's public support and the US economy.

The ongoing debate within the Trump administration over whether to leave the Paris deal, as Trump pledged to do on the campaign trail, has become the subject of media fascination, intense corporate lobbying, and worldwide vertigo.

Economists say that while there may be some positive short-term economic effects, Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris agreement and not fight to address climate change would most likely have devastating long-term economic consequences for the USA and the world.

In his announcement on Thursday, Mr Trump said the deal, which involved voluntary commitments, put the U.S. at a disadvantage. "This agreement is less about the climate and more about other countries gaining a financial advantage over the United States".

Given much of this research, a large number of business leaders spoke out against Trump's rumored decision before his announcement.

A person familiar with Trump's thinking said the President was convinced he needed to withdraw from the pact, and there was little chance of talking his out of it. The former reality TV star with a flair for drama later promoted his Rose Garden announcement in a tweet.

Trump said Wednesday he was still listening to "a lot of people both ways".

We will continue to lead. Disney CEO Bob Iger also has stepped down from the council. At a meeting of the G7 in Sicily last week, only Trump refused to reaffirm their nations' continuing support for the Paris deal, which was signed by almost 200 countries. Trump's daughter and senior adviser, Ivanka, has worked to ensure her father heard pro-Paris voices over the last several months, and has continued to press for a decision short of a full withdrawal.

Mr Trump cast his move as part of a bigger "America first" agenda, aimed at restoring U.S. jobs in struggling industries.

Ivanka Trump and her allies, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Trump's chief economist Gary Cohn, have pressed Trump to alter the U.S. commitments to the Paris agreement without fully pulling out of the accord.

In a Berlin speech, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and an "international responsibility".

But anti-Paris voices, led by chief strategist Steve Bannon and EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, appeared to win out.
