London Bridge closed amid reports of car mowing down crowd

London Bridge and the area around it has been closed due to a "major police incident", TFL said.

About two hours after the first reports of an incident, television images showed people walking away from the London Bridge area with their hands on their heads.

"We can confirm we have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London following the incident at London Bridge".

Nick Brandon of the BTP's force control room said he had received reports of an incident possibly involving a knife and a vehicle.

The Prime Minister is leading a Cobra emergency meeting later.

The bridge is in lock down and the area around it is closed with bus routes being diverted, as armed police and a bomb squad attend the scene and boats search the water.

He said: "I was going up the stairs of London Bridge Station".

In a statement after the attack, May said, "Following updates from police and security officials, I can confirm that the awful incident in London is being treated as a potential act of terrorism". There would have been a lot of people on London Bridge.

City transportation officials announced traffic on the bridge was shut down in both directions.

Witnesses on London Bridge reported seeing a van mounting the pavement and hitting pedestrians and a man with a knife running.

BBC reporter Holly Jones was at the bridge when the van came through and reported the van veered off the road and into crowds of people.

"He swerved right round me and then hit about five or six people".

"Then I tried to help people, wounded people".

In March, four people were killed in London after Khalid Masood rammed his vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, before fatally stabbing a policeman outside the Houses of Parliament. Ms Jones said police were on the scene within two minutes, quickly followed by ambulances.

"We ran for like 100 meters and then saw loads of police cars turned up and there was kind of a period of quite intense gunfire", he said.
