Arsene Wenger's first activity in the transfer market since signing a new contract last week was securing the services of Bosnian worldwide defender Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer.

Arsenal announced on their official website on Tuesday that Kolasinac will officially join the club in the coming weeks when his contract with Schalke comes to an end.

Kolasinac had a good season in the Bundesliga last season and will offer competition to either Nacho Monreal or Kieron Gibbs with one of them set to leave this summer.

The defender is due to meet up with his new team-mates in July for the start of the club's pre-season programme.

"I played in as many games as anyone at the club last season and I have been made to feel an important squad member".

"What he will give us is the fact that he is a player who can give assists, who can go forward, who can contribute good crosses".

"There are different positions [I can play] but I think left back is where I feel most comfortable".

Schalke have confirmed Kolasinac has agreed to terms which will keep him at Arsenal until 2022.

His confidence has taken a hit in recent years, but the full-back has shown his longevity in the Premier League, and would certainly bring a winning mentality to the Magpies. And I thank you for that. I turned down everything, and I always was open towards my club, and I struggled with how my career should continue. And I have become one of yours in the past six years, starting with the under-19 championship up until today.

It plays into the hands of interested club Newcastle United, who have been linked with week by The Sun with a swoop for the defender who was fleetingly an England global.
