Boko Haram attacks leave 6 dead, dozens hurt in Nigeria

Nigerian and regional military offensives have pushed the Islamists back into the remote Sambisa Forest, and Boko Haram attacks have been largely limited to suicide bombings, often carried out by children abducted by the group. They were combated by the army and police.

The ceremony was attended by Governors Kashim Shettima of Borno and Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi.

He called on citizens of the State to be calm, reassuring that security forces are making frantic efforts to safeguard lives and property. "The soldiers stopped them at the Giwa military barracks around 6:30pm", he said.

Young members of a civilian defense group, who have come together to combat the Islamic extremists, saw one suicide bomber at the headquarters.

The acting president later moved to the store of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to inspect the grains, following which he proceeded to the Bakassi IDP camp for the flag-off of the distribution programme.

The attack occurred at Muna area, Maiduguri.

"However, the police, comprising the Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) and others were swiftly deployed to the scene to engage the attackers".

Chukwu said the attackers set ablaze some houses in the village. "And shortly after, the military moved, mobilized maximally and repelled the attack, after engaging in a gun duel that lasted for about an hour", he said.

The jihadists attacked late Wednesday as evening prayers were ending, targeting four locations throughout Maiduguri.

The police commissioner said the first of the three suicide bomb attacks happened in the Goni-Kachallari area of Maiduguri and targeted worshippers leaving a mosque.

Nigeria's acting president is visiting Maiduguri after the attack which injured 24 others, his spokesman said on Thursday.

Dozens of injured people filled the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Thursday, said Abba Shehu, a private security worker.
