He was also the president of the Government of the People's Republic of Nagalim (GPRN), run by the group in Nagaland, parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

"He had protected the Naga nation from the occupational forces in the best way he can in the interest of the Naga people", a senior NSCN-K leader, who did not wish to be identified, told IANS. Talks are being held within the framework of Indian Constitution.

Khaplang died at the NSCN-K council headquarters in Takka in Myanmar's Sagaing Division.

Shourhozelie said that after Khaplang abrogated the ceasefire in 2015, the state government, in consultation with the Centre, sent several delegations to meet him in Myanmar and convince him to re-enter the peace process. The aftermath of the fallout saw at least four bloody encounters between the faction and the Indian army, including the ambush on 6 Dogra Regiment Convoy in Chandel district of Manipur that killed 20 Army personnel. However, no official announcement has been made from the NSCN-K yet on the appointment of a new chairman.

Born in 1940 at Waktham village in Myanmar, SS Khaplang floated Naga Defence Force in 1964 and went on to become the chairman of Eastern Naga Revolutionary Council the following year. The group, however, split up soon after.

Alerted in the nick of time by their own followers, Muivah and Swu, among other top leaders of the NSCN, escaped by a whisker in the pre-dawn raid Khaplang loyalists.

After Angami Zapu Phizo, Khaplang was the tallest Naga rebel leader who dominated the insurgency of Northeast for last 50 years, sources said, adding he was the unifying factor for the insurgent groups of the region.

"The NSCN-K is a Myanmar-based illegal organisation and we banned it in 2015".

BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav, posting on Twitter about Khaplang's death, said the leadership would be taken over by Khango Konyak.

"We will always treasure and cherish his commitment to do what the upcoming Naga generation wants as the Naga national movement is for the well-being of future Naga generations who should live in dignity and peace", Krome said in his condolence message.

There was no immediate reaction from the rebel group or key tribal bodies including Naga Hoho and Naga Mothers' Association.
