"Khuram Shazad Butt was known to the police and MI5", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Monday. It would have been smaller but similar to the 19-tonne truck driven into crowds last July in Nice, France, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds.

Their plan failed, the Guardian reported, when Khuram Butt, the trio's ringleader, was not able to hire the truck because he didn't provide payment details.

Sky News reports that after the terrorists were shot dead by the police on London Bridge, they opened the van and discovered more than a dozen Molotov cocktails inside.

Commander Dean Haydon, head of Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism Command, has admitted that it is necessary to know more about these knives.

"Getting hold of a 7.5 tonne lorry - the effects could have been even worse", Haydon told reporters.

The three, who were not connected to the weekend attack on London Bridge, are being questioned at a south London police station. Three people were killed there, with one, French tourist Xavier Thomas, knocked into the river Thames as he walked with his girlfriend on a summer evening.

Westminster attacker Khalid Masood and Manchester attacker Salman Abedi were classified as "former subjects of interest" at the time they carried out their assaults and were no longer under active investigation, the sources told CNN.

Three 12in knives with pink blades were recovered at the scene of the killings.

In an account of the June 3 attack released by the Metropolitan Police, Cole said he arrived at Borough Market to find "casualties on the pavements".

Among the evidence were plastic water bottles, like those used to create the fake suicide belts each of the terrorists was wearing during the attack.

"I then saw a few injured people who were bleeding, including a man who had been stabbed in the stomach and we got them to safety in the pub".

Butt, 27, and his two accomplices, Rachid Redouane, 30, who claimed to be Moroccan-Libyan, and Youssef Zaghba, a 22-year-old Italian national of Moroccan descent, all died in the attack.

In the attackers' van detectives found 13 wine bottles, filled with lighter fuel with rags wrapped round them to make Molotov cocktail petrol bombs.

Detectives believe the gravel may have been placed in the vehicle to make it heavier, or as part of a cover to justify hiring it, while the chairs may have been used to convince family and friends they were moving furniture.

Eight people were killed when the three drove into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people. Butt's knife also had a leather strap attached to the handle to keep the knife secured around his wrist.

They believe there are more who haven't come forward and they are urging them to do so. This would take advantage of the general police's greater numbers and their eyes and ears into communities.

The suspect is being held on suspicion of involvement in the preparation of terrorist acts and police are still carrying out searches at the address.

Bin Salem said there were no apparent links between Abedi and the London Bridge attackers. Company officials said they had no evidence that either of the other attackers worked at any of the franchises.

He said the Muslim holy month of Ramadan was a trigger factor for the upsurge, and it ends in just over a fortnight.

A text is received on Butt's phone, confirming the van hire.

According to eyewitnesses, the 16-year-old reportedly warned police that "something big was going to happen here", in the London Bridge attackers' home town.

At the time of the attack, Butt was on bail for a non-terrorist offence, of trying to defraud a bank. I decided I had to get my medic up there to help, but I didn't know what the threat was to their safety. In Zaghba's case that was Italy where he lived and Morocco, in Redouane 's case that was Ireland as well as Morocco and Libya.
