Gunman dead after shooting top Republican politician at baseball practice

The Washington Post and NBC news, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, identified the attacker as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. When they arrived, Alexandria police, along with members of the Congressional security detail, engaged the shooting suspect and provided aide to those injured.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who was at the practice, told CNN "it would have been a massacre" had Capitol Police not been present.

"Obviously, we don't know the motives of the shooter", Fleischmann said.

Yoder took to Twitter to commend the U.S. Capitol Police, who returned fire on the gunman and wounded him.

Mr Scalise was shot at a congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington. Scalise was coherent the whole time, Flake said.

"I heard from the staff of the intel committee that [Rep.] Steve Scalise was shot in the hip, one or two Capitol Police officers were shot". Neither was at the practice. Steve Scalise was among four people who were shot, one other victim was a staffer and two others were security detail officers.

Brooks identified the shooter as a "white male, armed with a rifle".

Flake said Scalise was playing second base at the practice when he was shot by a man standing off the third-base side of the field.
