Rickie Fowler leads US Open on day of highs and lows

Besides Fowler, the leaderboard is full of long shots. But if he is to capture the first major championship of his PGA career, he understands his work at the U.S. Open is far from over. All seven of his birdies came from inside 15 feet. Fowler's 65 represents the second-lowest first-round score in tournament history.

Being in such esteemed company, Fowler admits, is flattering, but it's not the end goal. "I'd rather be remembered for something that's done on Sunday". Paul Casey, who trailed by one shot after Round 1, has hit 5 shots on the par-5 14th hole and still hasn't reached the green.

Holywood's McIlroy finished four under for the final six holes, which helped the four-time major victor post a one-under-par 71 in Wisconsin, but the damage was done in the first round as McIlroy hit six over to effectively end his chances at the second major of the year. Brooks Koepka (40-1), Brian Harman (200-1) and Tommy Fleetwood (125-1) are two shots back at 5 under.

"I take it as a compliment", he said. "This was a fun, low round". On the ninth hole, he responded with two bogeys in three holes with a birdie to stop the bleeding, then rattled off four more birdies on the back nine.

"The fairways should be wide enough for me to hit it into them, I just didn't", McIlroy said. He made double bogeys on both holes to balloon to 6 over. The bad stretch has Johnson tied for 102nd. He said he won't change his approach four days after he and his wife celebrated the birth of their second child.

1 player in the world who shot a 3-over 75 and will head to today just hoping to fight back and make the cut. Obviously, I paid the price for it.

Johnson wasn't alone in his struggles.

"So a little bit of timing, and a bit of rust as well", added McIlroy, who was, at least, one shot better than Day after the Australian blotted his card with two triple-bogeys.

"It would be nice to get rid of that at some point", Fowler said. I'm not saying that this is the week or isn't the week.

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", said Fowler, considered by many to be the best player on the planet right now never to have won a major.

Phil Mickelson officially withdrew from the U.S. Open field on Thursday to attend his daughter's high school graduation in California.

Jason Day closed the opening round of the US Open on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) with a forgettable 79, putting him in a tie for 151st place and 14 shots off leader Rickie Fowler of the US.

Driving and bunker play are incredibly important at the long and sandy Erin Hills golf course. ESPN.com reported that the pilot was "alert and conscious" and was flown by helicopter to the hospital.

Schmidt told ESPN.com that he was the first to arrive at the crash scene and that he pulled Thompson away from the burning wreckage just before the blimp's propane tanks exploded.

Patrick Walsh, the CEO of AirSign, identified the pilot to ESPN as Trevor Thompson and credited crew chief Matt Schmidt with saving his life.
