The segment, "Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before", the network said in a press release. Great White is set to air at 7 p.m. CT on Sunday, July 23. That's a lot of ground (or water) for the Olympian to make up.

Phelps, 31, has 23 Olympic swimming gold medals and retired after Rio 2016. No word has been released on what stroke the swimmer will use in his battle against the shark. Great white sharks, on the other hand, weigh between 1,500-2,400 pounds and can measure up to 21 feet long.

It is not yet clear under what circumstances Phelps will race the shark.

Michael Phelps must be getting desperate for competition.

Now all we need is Debbie Phelps sitting poolside next to the shark's mother, and we've got the Olympics all over again.

In another, hopefully, less life-threatening Shark Week program, Phelps will immerse himself in all-things shark to learn about the oft-misunderstood species in Shark School With Michael Phelps. But if racing sharks is what you want to do, then we're here to support your dreams.

"I was able to do something that I had always wanted to do".

To check out the wild swim yourself, tune into the Discovery Channel on July 23rd to see who wins the Great Gold vs. Apparently Shark Week wasn't enough of a meme for the Discovery Channel, so they decided to make humans race huge fish because. reasons. "Current consensus among shark scientists is that the top swimming speed of the Great White is at least 25 miles per hour". Probably his race against a shark. Phelps has been recorded reaching speeds of 6mph in the pool, while the great white can reach speeds of up to 25mph.
