Nursultan Nazarbayev condoles on death of Helmut Kohl

Bild reported in its online edition that Kohl died in the morning at his home in Ludwigshafen, in western Germany.

On behalf of the Chinese government and people and in his own name, Xi voiced deep condolences over Kohl's death and honest sympathy for the former chancellor's family. Among the State of Israel's greatest friends, he was completely dedicated to its security.

Diplomatic relations between Germany and the United States were at an all-time high at the time when Kohl led his country. His admiration for Israel and Zionism found expression in my many meetings with him and in his resolute stand in favor of Israel, which he constantly presented in Europe and in global forums.

Less than a year after the November 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, he spearheaded the end of Germany's decades-long division into East and West, ushering in a new era in European politics.

Kohl has been a part of both the divided Germany as well as the reunited Germany. Leader of Opposition in the Bundestag through most of the 1970s, he was elected Chancellor in 1982 as the CDU returned to power.

Kohl was married for 41 years to Hannelore Renner, an interpreter of English and French who stood firmly but discreetly by his side.

Present leaders of the world have expressed their condolences on the death of Germany's revolutionary leader, who led his country for 16 long years. The world has benefited from his vision and efforts.

"We feel that a life has ended and he who lived it will go down in history", said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"Helmut Kohl filled the European house with life - not only because he built bridges to the west as well as to the east, but also because he never ceased to design even better blueprints for the future of Europe", Juncker said.

"Preparations are already underway", Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker's spokeswoman Mina Andreeva told AFP.
