Global pariah North Korea may host the 2018 Winter Olympics jointly with South Korea in an effort to relieve tensions between the two border countries, Seoul officials said.

Despite Mr Jang's comments, South Korea said sports minister Do Jong-Hwan was misunderstood when he mentioned a North Korean skiing resort in relation to next February's Games.

Such a collaboration could help the neighbors resume dialogue after a period of official silence.

The proposal is in line with the suggestion earlier this month by Moon Jae-in, South Korea's new president, that the two countries could lead a bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

The International Olympic Committee has revealed that the organization is open to a collaboration between South and North Korea at next year's Olympic Games. He also stated he believed that North Korea's Masikryong Ski Resort has the potential to be a fantastic Olympic venue.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to thaw lingering tensions as we try to bring North Korea on board", he said.

However, South Korea has never finished higher than eighth in an Olympic ski jumping event.

"If the neighboring countries in northeast Asia, including North and South Korea, can host the World Cup together, it would help to create peace", Moon said.

The championships, which will feature a performance by the North Korean taekwondo demonstration team, mark the first sports exchange between the Koreas since the liberal Moon took office in May.

In April, the National Hockey League announced that it would not halt the season to participate in the next Winter Olympics scheduled to be held in South Korea in February 2018. Pyongyang also sent athletes to the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, an event that it has boycotted in the past.

Taeyang was appointed to the position by the PyeongChang Organizing Committee president Lee Hee-Beom, who described the K-pop star as a "great musician" who will "greatly contribute to promoting the PyeongChang Olympics to the world".
