PM Modi and PM Costa launch unique Start-up portal

Before leaving for Lisbon, Modi had said during his meeting with Costa, the two leaders will build on their recent discussions and review the progress of various joint initiatives and decisions.

"I look forward to this opportunity to have an in-depth exchange of views on further consolidating the robust and wide ranging partnership between India and the United States", the prime minister said. "The startups here is an exciting space that blends youth, idea, technology, innovation and creativity to generate value and wealth for the benefit of the society", he said.

Modi also announced that India will set up of a Chair for Indian Studies at the University of Lisbon and developing a Hindi-Portuguese dictionary.

Between 2014 and 2016, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi cultivated a strong personal relationship with U.S. president Barack Obama. This is the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Portugal and follows Costa's visit to India in January this year.

"However, I take satisfaction in the fact that this is the second summit between India and Portugal within a period of six months", he said.

"All other substantive bilateral issues will depend on the degree to which both leaders will be able to create chemistry and see eye-to-eye on key challenges, including how to contain China and re-engage Russian Federation. or if both countries should continue to expand their economic and defence partnership".

"And, the foreign direct investment from Portugal to India, though small, has doubled during 2016-17".

"We will also discuss ways to further enhance the bilateral engagement, especially in the areas of economic cooperation, science and technology, space collaboration and people-to-people ties".

Later on Saturday, Modi will lead delegation-level talks with Costa before the signing of agreements and launch of the India-Portugal Start-up Hub.

Earlier, Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who has his origin in Goa, sprang a surprise for Modi when he hosted a special Gujarati vegetarian lunch for him.

The highlight of Modi's four-day three-nation visit will be the USA leg as Modi will be meeting president Donald Trump for the first time on June 26 in Washington. "But there have been two very good phone calls between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi that you can point to as showing both countries' interest in the relationship", the White House official argued.
