Israel attacks Syrian posts after cross-border fire from Syria

"We also view with utmost gravity Iran's attempts to establish itself militarily in Syria as well as its attempts to arm Hezbollah -via Syria and Lebanon - with advanced weaponry", Netanyahu said on Sunday.

"Due to the unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty", Israel has protested to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which maintains the 1974 ceasefire between Israel and Syria, a military spokesperson said.

Israel has steadfastly stayed on the sidelines of Syria's civil war, now in its seventh year, refraining from taking sides or getting drawn into hostilities. The Syrian military also claimed that two people died in the Israeli strikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors events in the war-torn country, said Israeli forces had fired missiles causing casualties among regime troops and loyal militias. In response Israel fired missiles at tanks in Syria and according to Arab media reports, killed two Syrian soldiers.

"The [Syrian] army repelled a massive al-Nusra Front attack on the city of Baath in the Quneitra province [bordering the Golan Heights]". The cooperation began when the Israelis began assisting Syrian fighters, including alleged "Islamist extremists", through medical care at Israeli hospitals, in a relationship that soon led to direct funding for fighters for salaries, ammunition and weapons. "We will respond strongly to any attack on our territory or our citizens", Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV, director of the Institute for Historical Review, Mark Weber, said that by carrying such periodical attacks against Syrian positions in the Golan Heights, Tel Aviv is setting the stage for a massive military attack against Syrian territories.
