Eighteen Opposition parties, including Nitish Kumar of JD (U), Congress, Trinamool and Left parties, met in New Delhi this morning and chose to field former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as the Opposition candidate for elections to the post of Vice-President.

In addition to his surname, Gopalkrishna Gandhi has a distinguished track record. He was the governor of West Bengal between 2004 and 2009.

Earlier, it was reported that the Left parties are mulling to propose the candidature of Gandhi for the post of President.

The vice president is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprising members of both houses of the Indian Parliament and the elections are held through secret ballots, conducted by the country's independent Election Commission.

It will, however, give the opposition something to shout about. The 18 Opposition parties met on Tuesday to decide on their nominee for the vice-presidential poll. Speaking to TOI, Raja said Gandhi cinformed his willingness to be the opposition nominee following a unaminous decision by all opposition parties.

Since the NDA is yet to announce their candidate for the vice president's post, if they reach a consensus with the Opposition on their choice, an election would not be required.

Informally, opposition leaders had been discussing possible candidates for the last few days and had agreed to put a final seal of approval on Gopal Gandhi's candidature at the meeting convened by the Congress President.

The erudite, bespectacled Gopalkrishna Gandhi has a mind of his own and has chosen to speak out against those in power, including his political friends. He was also critical of the UPA because of the manner in which it was using the CBI as its "hatchet".

Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the son of Devadas Gandhi and Lakshmi Gandhi, is the younger brother of Rajmohan Gandhi, and the late Ramchandra Gandhi, and Tara Bhattacharjee (Gandhi).

Be that as it may, his candidature is not something many will argue against.
