Disney Officially Casts Live-Action Aladdin, Jasmine & Genie

Meanwhile, Will Smith will play the role of the Genie and Naomi Scott has nabbed the role of Jasmine in the Guy Ritchie-directed film.

Disney announced the cast of the upcoming live-action Aladdin remake during the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Saturday. Guy Ritchie will direct the movie, which will be Disney's follow-up to the live-action hit Beauty and the Beast. Mena Massoud takes the lead as the street-rat himself, with Power Rangers' Naomi Scott joining him as Jasmine.

Following an extensive search that saw Ritchie and Disney screen test over 2,000 actors, the studio has landed on Mena Massoud to star in the titular role.

Will Smith has already been cast as the Genie.

So far the young star only has a handful of acting credits, including Jack Ryan, Open Heart, and The 99.

The live-action Aladdin was originally expected to begin a six-month shoot in July, however, casting delays appear to have altered the schedule. News reported. Those in the know at the studio said they're looking for someone known to play Jafar, the villain, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An official release date has not been set, though Aladdin was not included in their 2017-2019 lineup.

Disney is hoping to start shooting Aladdin next month in the United Kingdom, but there's still got plenty of work to do before then.
