As the motorcade rolled in, there were waves from the crowds and some cheers before the cars carried on out of sight on the sprawling property once used for farming and horse pastures.

While American Brittany Lincicome had hoped that Donald Trump does not attend the test, for fear that its presence does not interfere with the normal conduct of the tournament, his compatriot Lexi Thompson, who has played golf in the past with Mr. Trump, has assured Friday that it had "not been intimated": "This is really interesting", she insisted.

"Left Paris for United States of America".

USA player Lexi Thompson - who has played with Trump in Florida - said she felt "pretty comfortable" playing in front of him on Friday, adding that it was "definitely entertaining" to have him at the course.

The event was expected to draw protesters critical of the U.S. Golf Association, which operates the tournament, for not moving it to a different venue after audio surfaced past year in which Trump made derogatory comments about women.

Donald Trump, to no one's surprise, became the story of the day when he and his entourage arrived Friday afternoon at one of his summer White Houses, Trump National Bedminster, which is hosting this week's U.S. Women's Open. Ryan O'Toole, who said she was happy to finish her round before the president's arrival, noted that she allowed 20 additional minutes to get through security and to the course.

Only three sitting presidents have attended USGA events with Warren G. Harding (1921) and Bill Clinton (1997) going to the US Open.

Choi, a 17-year-old amateur, teed off on 10 and joined Feng atop the leaderboard after a burst of four straight birdies from the 18th hole. "I didn't really get distracted".

"I mean our tour has so much talent now", said Kerr, who won Open in 2007.

"I heard people like kind of screaming so that's what I was trying to find out, like why they were screaming", she said. For months, the group has called on the USGA and LPGA to sever ties with Trump, arguing that it is wildly inappropriate for one of the world's most prestigious women's golf tournaments to give millions of dollars in revenue, free advertising, and branding to Trump, who they called "a self-admitted serial sexual predator and unapologetic misogynist".
