What to know before downloading app?

Players will be able to link their accounts between the Nintendo Switch console and the new app so that they can view certain historical data/statistics, as well as directly integrate with online features of compatible games.

We assume this message means that the servers aren't yet live, but that the app has been pre-released in advance of Splatoon 2's release on Friday.

Also, remember that the online service of Nintendo will remain free until the end of this year.

You can buy awesome glasses from the app, so there is that.

That changes today with the launch of Nintendo Switch Online, the new app from Nintendo for iOS and Android. Some fans will tell you that the Nintendo Switch's appeal is too closely associated with its seeming simplicity for Nintendo to possibly risk compromising it by incorporating modern apps and abilities.

This structure makes both Splatoon and its sequel a great experience, even if you don't typically enjoy the often toxic, unwelcoming world of online shooters.

Do I have to have the Nintendo Switch Online app to go online in Splatoon 2 and other games? Nintendo's app will act as the hub for online games through which players receive invites and other notifications.

How does voice chat work with Nintendo Switch Online? If they want to hear game sounds and chat, they'll either need a one-sided headset, or a splitter like the one that comes with Hori's adorable licensed headset. It's free to use until Nintendo kicks off its paid networking services later this year.

The app does not yet appear to be available for Android devices.

At the moment, Nintendo Switch Online app users can not connect and chat at any time, they need to be in the Online Lounge within Splatoon 2 before they are able to chat. Said app wasn't available to download at launch, but you can grab it right now.

When the service launches, players will no longer be able to play multiplayer games with their friends and are thus required to purchase membership to continue playing. However, the appeal of the Nintendo Switch is actually obvious the moment you turn it on. And when I tried to create my own lobby, I quickly discovered that I was unable to invite friends from the app, with no clear feedback why.
