Despite not having Guillermo del Toro back behind the camera, it's hard not to be excited for the long-awaited, and somewhat unexpected, Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the big-budgeted 2013 sci-fi monster film that grossed just a little over $100 million in the United States.

We don't know much about the plot of Pacific Rim: Uprising yet, but we do know that Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost; Stacker was the leader of the army in the last film who famously vowed to "cancel the apocalypse".

Creator Guillermo del Toro first announced plans for a sequel back in 2014, and after many delays, it is finally slated to premiere on February 28, 2018.

Although Pacific Rim wasn't well received by critics, it did earn $411 million at the worldwide box office and became a favorite among fans of del Toro's work. The franchise narrowly pulled off getting a sequel, and now we've got an intriguing first look at how it's coming together.

Steven S. DeKnight, whose credits include "Spartacus" and "Daredevil", takes over directing duties from Guillermo del Toro.

Legendary launched a viral marketing website for Pacific Rim: Uprising called Go Jaeger focused on the Jaeger program, specifically encouraging viewers to "Join the Jaeger Uprising".

There was a time it seemed Pacific Rim, despite being an instant fan-favorite, wouldn't actually get a sequel.

Boyega and Eastwood will star alongside Cailee Spaeny and Jing Tian in a story of a new generation of Jaeger pilots who represent humanity in the fight against massive kaiju monsters.
