Pichai, Cook rap Trump for banning transgenders in United States military

President Trump granted The Wall Street Journal a 45 minute interview, during which he made a bombshell claim: AAPL CEO Tim Cook is supporting his administration's goal of reviving American manufacturing and bringing back U.S.jobs by committing to build three new US -based Apple factories. It generally prefers to work with foreign suppliers; this way, it can source parts from companies and shield itself from risks.

Cook said in February that Apple spent US$50 billion in 2016 with its USA suppliers. "We're initially putting $1bn into the fund", Cook said in May. The Journal described the recent sit-down between Trump and Cook as a 45-minute conversation that touched on issues including the Paris climate accord and Trump's immigration policy.

It seems that Apple prefers to invest its money into suppliers and manufacturers, not necessarily its own plants.

At this point, the effort on the Trump administration's side is in its beginning stages. The president said in Time Magazine after the election past year, that he wanted Apple to build its best plant ever in the U.S.

"I spoke to [Cook], he's promised me three big plants - big, big, big", Trump said. Apple now only manufactures the Mac Pro computers in the United States, as the company has preferred to work with foreign suppliers to protect itself from the risks of manufacturing its own products, while having the leverage to demand lower prices from several partners.

At present the number of workers that Apple employs directly is 80,000.

It appears that Cook once again feels responsible for using his voice, this time to elevate equality in the transgender military service debate. It may be that Apple is indeed planning to build a bunch of factories in the US. Besides that, Apple has to a great extent declined to remark on its assembling designs.
