Farmhand characters can do nearly anything your main character can do, including marriage, participating in festivals, and various farm tasks. You won't need to set up a server to play with your friends on PC, as multiplayer will be handled through Steam invites.

In multiplayer, the other players will work as your farmhands, living in cabins on the farm that are placed shortly after the game is started. Each player will also have their own inventories, which they can access even when the main player is offline through a chest in their cabin.

A lot of players have requested player-to-player marriage.

The role-playing farm simulation game puts the player in the role of a young employee who flees a boring office job to try to save their grandfather's dilapidated old farm located in Stardew Valley. In a new blog post, the developer provides a bit of insight into how multiplayer will work, but there's one tidbit that's sure to garner attention: player marriage.

However, only the host will have a say in certain decisions, such as when will the crew go to sleep, when to start and end festivals, among others. We're still working out what that will be. Though they haven't figured out how non-Steam version will work yet, so but it will likely be similar. No split-screen or local multiplayer will be available.

"Effort so far has been focused on overcoming the biggest technical hurdle: synchronizing multiple games over the Internet". The post said that "15,000 lines of code have been rewritten", and nearly every source file had to be changed in some way to facilitate the multiplayer addition. The plan is to hold a beta test "at the end of the year for Steam users", followed by an "early 2018" release for the patch. Mod authors will be encouraged to update their mods during this beta period.

The update will be coming early 2018 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It's going to take some time to roll multiplayer out to each system, but we do know the Nintendo Switch is the first console slated to receive the multiplayer update.
