Another win gives Newgarden lead in points

Josef Newgarden turned the Honda Indy 200 into a long victory parade Sunday afternoon at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Newgarden started the day in second place behind pole-winner and Team Penske teammate Will Power, but pulled ahead on Lap 13. "I have nothing but excellent things to say about Chevrolet and it always feels good when you are on a Chevy team and you win a Honda race".

Added Rahal: "Like today, he [Power] could be on push-to-pass at times and I'd be in a really good tow behind him, and it would be similar". "The boys on the (No.) 2 auto gave me everything I needed with a fast vehicle".

The next race on the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule is the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway on August 20. And any chance he had at doing that ended when the rookie Gutierrez locked up his brakes, holding up Power and Graham Rahal behind him. I understand if he was ahead of Newgarden because then, if it goes yellow, he gets his lap back. Newgarden's average speed was 114.67 miles per hour in the #2 PPG Automotive Refinish Team Penske Chevrolet. "So second, for the pace of my vehicle, that was as good as we could get today". He faked left then went right and got me on the inside and there was nothing I could really do and then he was very strong, very fast from there on. "It makes everyone feel good about what we're doing". "Before qualifying, we made a few changes and kind of got it in the window".

Helio Castroneves, who finished seventh, remained second in the points race, but is now seven points behind Newgarden (453-446), with Dixon falling from first to third. He is sixth in the point standings and qualified fourth for Sunday's race.

The race was not without a spot of controversy.

Power won the Fast 6 qualifier Saturday with a lap of 126.672 miles per hour compared to 126.407 for Newgarden as Chevrolet took the top two spots. Newgarden is one of the next faces of IndyCar both on and off the track, and honestly the league couldn't ask for a better representative, both in how he carries himself and how well he races.

"We had our hands full today but I think we can still turn it around". I'm sure you saw it.

"We'll talk about it behind closed doors".

"I thought Gutierrez for a second was going to run into me on turn 4", Newgarden said.

"Yeah, it was good for a breather, that's about it, because everyone had pitted", Power said of the late caution. He's not even leading.

"The Verizon auto was really hooked up", Power said.

Newgarden said he agreed a conversation between the all the drivers would need to take place in the near future. We have two cars up there on the front row.

Rahal added: "After we cleared him [Gutierrez], all we were trying to do was haul ass to catch up again".
