President Trump tweets insults at CT senator

Appearing on CNN's "New Day" Monday morning, Blumenthal said the investigation into Russia's involvement in meddling in the US election and "potential collusion" by the Trump campaign "must be pursued". Richard Blumenthal in a tweetstorm on Monday, calling the Democrat a "phony Vietnam con artist!"

"Never in U.S.history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like Senator Richard Blumenthal", Trump tweeted.

In the tweets, Trump reacts to Blumenthal talking about the alleged Russian collusion. "He told stories about his Vietnam battles and...." he wrote in a second tweet.

Blumenthal also expressed concern that the Trump administration has "weaponized" investigations into leaks of classified information.

Trump - who dodged Vietnam War service but wages a perpetual battle against objective facts - called the CT lawmaker a "phony Vietnam con artist" and a liar of historic proportions.

Trump's description of the senator as a "Vietnam con artist" was seemingly a reference to speeches Blumenthal made implying he had served in Vietnam.

"The president, meanwhile, also railed against the "#fake news on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO".

Trump never served in the military, despite being eligible during the Vietnam War.

He went on to mention the Trump campaign's possible role in the scandal.

Blumenthal addressed the controversy in a press conference during his 2010 Senate campaign, and clarified that he served "during" the war as a reservist, and not "in" the war overseas. Since the arrival of Kelly, who joined Trump in Bedminster over the weekend, the president has continued to be active on Twitter.

President Trump is on vacation, but that hasn't stopped him from watching early morning cable TV and tweeting angrily in response. "The best way to avoid it and maybe the only way is through legislation to protect the integrity and independence of the special counsel".
