A resolution adopted at a meeting of the chief minister's faction yesterday had said the appointment of Dhinakaran was against the party rules and that its cadres have been asked to ignore his directives.

Modi's "friendly counsel" to Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and rival AIADMK leader O Paneerselvam was said to have been made during their separate meetings with him in Delhi recently, a key AIADMK functionary said. However, Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP's State unit president, said it [the party] was not exerting any pressure on both the factions to come together."It is an internal matter of another party", Dr.

Dhinakaran, who was appointed by Sasikala as her deputy following her conviction in a disproportionate assets case, was sidelined by the party in April.

While this is a significant step in healing the rift with the breakaway faction led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS), senior leaders in the breakaway faction described the resolution as a half measure.

Speaking to the media in Thanjavur, hinakaran pointed out that EPS and other ministers had passed the resolution on Thursday as they were afraid of his decision to go on a statewide tour to strengthen the party.

After the demise of former TN CM J Jayalalitha, the AIADMK was divided into camps in a bitter power struggle.

The warring AIADMK factions in Tamil Nadu are likely to plan a merger as they look for ways to avert certain defeat in the next round of elections, amidst a chorus of protests from within and outside the party factions over the open abuse of democracy by the ruling party. Dinakaran was the party candidate in the bypoll necessitated by the death of Jayalalithaa.

Sasikala, the general secretary of the Amma faction, had been the de facto No 2 in the AIADMK for over three decades thanks to her close association with Jayalalithaa as her live-in aide. Dinakaran had visited Sasikala in jail and seemed to have been resolved to taking control of the party.

The "apt word for him is 420", ANI reported Palaniswami as saying about Dinakaran. Sasikala and her family have intricately hard-wired themselves to the party-DNA over the last several years under the patronage of Jayalalithaa.

If EPS moves an inch, Dinakaran will put down his government because he has 37 MLAs with him.

Panneerselvam said, "We are keenly watching the political situation".
