McCarthy sat out Everton's pre-season finale with Sevilla on Sunday, with Everton manager Ronald Koeman telling reporters after the game that he was held out due to a knee injury.

After moving back to Everton this summer, the chance to pull on the Blue shirt again and play at Goodison Park in the Premier League, in front of my family and friends, really excites me, which is why our opening game against Stoke can not come soon enough.

He helped start the move that resulted in the winning goal with some neat link-up play with Idrissa Gueye and Sandro Ramirez, before showing all that experience to peel away in the area and guide a free header into the opposite corner. Our preparations for the new season have gone well - we are unbeaten in six matches - and I, personally, feel good going into the opening weekend.

"Everton have got a good side and they've spent money from letting good players go, perhaps similar to Southampton a couple of years ago".

Everton have their sights set on a potential UEFA Champions League berth this season, while Stoke City will be among the teams that will try to avoid relegation and maybe surprise with a Top 10 finish.

Everton are unbeaten in three games against Stoke (W2, D1), having lost the previous three.

Last August the Toffees began with a hard fought 1-1 home draw with Tottenham and followed it up with four straight league wins.

But in his first Premier League outing Rooney not only scored the victor with a beautifully executed header from a Dominic Calvert-Lewin cross, but he also exuded quality and composure throughout.

The Toffees have scored 30 Premier League goals at home in 2017, more than any other side - and five more than they managed in the whole of 2016. But Koeman believes his rivals have gotten even stronger than last season.

That gap of 4,869 days is the longest between goals for the same club in the Premier League. "If you look at my team this weekend, and the bench, you can not compare it to the big six".
