Doug Marrone says Jags starting QB job is there for the taking

"Everyone saw it out there. Whatever you want to call it, I'm still trying to evaluate who the best person is at that position".

The Jaguars' starting defensive line is supposed to be a strength this season, but it sure didn't look like it on Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bortles hasn't gotten it done in three-plus seasons.

If Bortles potentially loses his starting position, the Jags will need a veteran to keep the team afloat.

With a track record that included throwing five interceptions in an early camp practice and drawing ire from wide receiver Allen Robinson, Blake Bortles was already on very thin ice heading into this week's preseason game. Bortles disagreed with the sentiment. But the Jaguars have gambled on Bortles rebounding, and so far it has been a big loser. As a bad as we played in the first half, we made a lot of mistakes. Imagine if we only had 500, it would be probably way worse.

"Well, I think you've got to take that into consideration, again, is he in consideration?" Should he get injured at any point, his $18 million salary next season becomes guaranteed, which means the Jaguars will end up facing the same conundrum Washington did with RG3 a few years ago: playing him risks a huge cap problem, even for a team flush with space. He had some impressive runs after the catch and one very hard catch in traffic in the fourth quarter. They also could try to trade for someone, or they could sign one of the various available free agents, including one specific quarterback who has accomplished more than either of the current in-house options combined. Henne is quite obviously the team's best option right now, unless the Jags bring in a guy like Colin Kaepernick, as we've proposed in the past.

Marrone admitted on Thursday that he's looking for someone who can run the offence.

Kaepernick has a lifetime record of 28-30 as an National Football League starter, including 1-10 last season, but he has also taken teams to two NFC championship games and a Super Bowl. And they're relishing what they see in Jacksonville and Blake Bortles.
