Workers continued to search for survivors Sunday, a day after a train derailed in India, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 80 others.

"This is the strictest possible action that could have been taken and the intention was to send out a message that officers at each level have to take responsibility".

Six of the derailed coaches were severely damaged.

The minister also announced 3.5 rupees lakh ex-gratia compensation for those who lost their lives, 50,000 for the seriously injured and 25,000 for those who received minor injuries.

UP health minister Sidharth Nath Singh tweeted that the injured were being sent to the primary health centre in Khatauli and district hospitals in Muzaffarnagar, and all ambulances from Meerut and Muzaffarnagar had been mobilised to help in rescue.

As per various reports, the track on which the train was travelling had been put under unofficial maintenance.

The railway staff was working to clear the derailed coaches and fix the damaged tracks as all trains on the route have been diverted.
