Dwayne Johnson, better known under the name of "The Rock", goes down to the second place of a rating that he dominated a year ago with $ 65 million of gross revenue.

The 28-year-old La La Land star made 20 million pounds in pre-tax earnings in the year up to June, knocking Jennifer Lawrence off the top spot for the first time since 2015. She edges out Ryan Reynolds, who at $21 million ranks 15th on the list of top paid men - but the remaining 14 highest-paid male actors officially made more than the highest-paid woman.

Forbes' associate editor told The Telegraph action movies, especially superhero movies, are a big reason why actresses are making less.

The Boston native, who's career started as a hip-hop artist, grossed $68 million this year in earnings.

Johnson's "Fast and 'furious" co-star Vin Diesel was number three while Robert Downey Jr, Tom Cruise and Bollywood kings Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar rounded out the top ten.

This week Forbes revealed the highest paid actors, and as predicted, there was a significant gender wage gap.
