David Torrence, a 31-year-old middle distance runner from Oakland, California, represented Peru at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The cause of death is now unknown, and police are investigating the scene after the runner was found at the bottom of the Center Court Condominiums pool, according to The Arizona Republic.

Staff members at the condo complex in Scottsdale had called 911 at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday after seeing a man at the bottom of the pool. "Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play", noted Sergeant Ben Hoster of the Scottsdale Police Department. He was pronounced dead on the scene at the Center Court Condominiums.

After news of Torrence's tragically premature death came to light, the athletics world paid tribute.

On Twitter, USA Track and Field described the news as "devastating", New Zealand's double Olympic medallist Nick Willis wrote that "nobody was more dedicated to their running" than Torrence and Canada's three-time Olympian Nate Brannen said his friend will be "greatly missed". "He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this hard time".

Torrence was a two-time champion of the Hoka One One Long Island Mile in NY, and was aiming for his third title on September 6.

Torrence, who in the past ran for both the United States and Peru-where his mother is from-competitively, had a host of accomplishments to his name. After helping a US team set an indoor world record in the 4x800 meter, Torrence set a new USA indoor record in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:16.76.

He was in Arizona on a training camp.

He was involved in the investigation into Somalian coach Jama Aden, who was arrested by Spanish police a year ago as part of a probe into doping.
