Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has resigned, county clerk George Christenson confirmed to TPM Thursday.

Clarke, however, had previously vowed not to resign over the headshake-shakedown scandal until "right after that little mouse does", referring to the county executive pursuing a case against the sheriff.

Clarke submitted his resignation to the Milwaukee County clerk, noting in his letter that it would be effective as of 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

A lengthy inquest into the dehydration death of a Milwaukee County Jail inmate earlier this year raised troubling questions about how Clarke managed the jail - just as the White House was said to be considering him.

Clarke rose to prominence as a national media figure during his tenure as sheriff of Milwaukee County, increasingly appearing on cable news outlets like FOX News to talk about police issues.

Clarke is perhaps best known for his often controversial comments on race and gun violence, along with his outspoken support for Republican President Donald Trump. Walker's spokesman Tom Evenson said once he receives official notification of his resignation, the process of finding a replacement will begin.

Clarke also aggressively pushed his department to partner with the Department of Homeland Security to crack down on and round up undocumented immigrants.

Conservative groups have called on Clarke to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018, but he has rejected that suggestion. Following a CNN report in June that accused him of plagiarizing his master's thesis, the sheriff withdrew his name from consideration for the position. The reason for the ex-sheriff's resignation remains unclear.

Clarke recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire".
