Pittsburgh plans to compete for the new site of AmazonHQ2, a second headquarters location announced by the Seattle-based company early Thursday.

The e-commerce giant Amazon on Thursday, September 7, announced that it is planning to build yet another headquarters called Amazon HQ2 in a now unknown city in the United States.

Amazon estimates that its investments in Seattle from 2010 to 2016 added $38 billion to the city's economy.

This vacation headquarters for Amazon is expected to equal (in size and investment) the company's Seattle headquarters-which they're now calling HQ1. With 50,000 jobs and billions in investment at stake, Fitzgerald said the city, county and state is "certainly willing to put economic development incentives together".

"We want to find a city that is excited to work with us and where our customers, employees, and the community can all benefit", the company said on its search website, about why it was choosing its second headquarters through a public process.

Amazon's campus in the northwest USA state of Washington now employs more than 40,000 people scattered across 33 buildings and 750,000 square meters (8.1 million square feet) of office space, according to a company fact sheet. Even its larger corporate campus that stretches down the surrounding blocks may be too small for the space Amazon would want for a second headquarters.

According to Amazon, this second headquarters will employ up to 50,000 full-time employees, with an average annual total compensation exceeding $100,000 over the next ten to fifteen years.

Amazon said it was seeking proposals by October 19 and would select the location next year.

Asked if an Amazon headquarters could fit in Boston, Walsh said the city could make it happen. The company opened an office on the South Side in January and recruited experts in machine translation from Carnegie Mellon University to run it. Amazon has also partnered with Findlay-based Seegrid for self-driving vehicles inside its distribution centers. Further, even employees working in HQ1 now will be given an opportunity to move to HQ2, notes USA Today.

Amazon opened the Amazon HQ2 Request for Proposal ("RFP") Thursday.

The company recently bought up-scale USA grocery chain Whole Foods Market for more than United States dollars 13 billion, which will help its ambitions in that sector.
