Del Potro versus Nadal: Recent history favors the 'Gentle Giant'

Back in 2009, Del Potro's victory earned him the US Open trophy; this time it has only given him another shot at Nadal, a man he has beaten five times in 13 meetings, and the chance of getting to the final again.

Del Potro, whose career was nearly ended past year after undergoing four wrist surgeries, wrapped up the first set thanks to a break in the 11th game secured with a blistering crosscourt pass.

"If I win, I will be happy, but being healthy and feeling well and complete is more important than winning Grand Slams", stated Nadal as media reports suggest. He made the exact same achievement with Masters tournament in Monte Carlo and with the ATP tournament in Barcelona.

"I'm not disappointed because it's been a good run this year already".

"I think I played my best match of the tournament, I did everything well", said the 24th seeded Argentine.

Men's quarterfinals: No. 12 Pablo Carreno Busta beat No. 29 Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4, 6-2; No. 28 Kevin Anderson beat No. 17 Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-3, 7-6 (7).

Carreno Busta, seeded 12th, played qualifiers in his first four matches and then beat 29th seed Diego Schwartzman, reaching the semis without dropping a set.

However, few would begrudge Del Potro a little luck after he was pushed to the brink of retirement by four wrist surgeries that saw his ranking slip as low as 1,045 and forced him to miss 10 Grand Slam tournaments. And Nadal maintain an 8-5 career edge over his opponent.

"It is well that some of them we have been able to know such a long journey in this tournament", simply said Anderson. The 6-foot-8 (2.03-meter) Anderson, who won an NCAA doubles title at the University of IL, is equipped with a big serve, certainly, but he had been a quarterfinalist at a major only once until this week.

"He's had many injuries but the way he has come back is a great example to the kids".

"If I play at my best level, I believe I'm going to have my chances against everybody".

We have to add, though, that Anderson, had no major tests before these finals. Ankle surgery - and left knee, right shoulder and groin injuries - were problems a year ago. Currently, Roger Federer holds 19 gran slam titles and this is going to be Rafael Nadal's 23rd career major final.

"I think my backhand is improving every week", he said. He's an awesome fighter. "I was pretty nervous with it being the first time on the sport's most famous stage".

"I'm sure there will be different emotions than I have experienced when I walk out onto the court".

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity".

"And then, I don't know the statistics, I didn't see it, but I don't feel I make many mistakes after that first set, and I really hit good winners".
