Authorities say one student died and three were injured in Wednesday at Freeman High School in the tiny town of Rockford.

The suspect was also not identified, but Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said that: "The shooter is in the back seat of a patrol vehicle right now". The student claims the alleged shooter was his friend and passed around notes that said he was planning on "doing something dumb" that would get him killed or sent to jail. He wouldn't release how many people were injured Wednesday or their conditions.

Fox Spokane quotes a local fire chief as saying the "threat is eliminated".

A Twitter user named Christina identified herself as a junior at the high school and said she had been evacuated following at least four shots. The lockdown has now been lifted, the school system tweeted.

"Due to a reported shooting near Freeman High School, all southside SPS schools are now in lockdown", the tweet said.

She said: "He called me and said "Mom there are gunshots".

"Our hearts are broken by the events at Freeman High School this morning". Multiple ambulances and a Lifeflight helicopter were dispatched to the high school.

The shooting prompted the Spokane Public Schools district to put all campuses on lockdown at around 10:30 a.m. local time.
