On Wednesday night, three children were found dead inside a California apartment, and a man married to the victims' mother is now in custody for their murders.

Police say neighbors called 911 to report a domestic violence incident involving Hodges and his wife, and that as officers were on their way a second call came in reporting the killings. Police and first responders tried life-saving measures on the children, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The names and ages of the children were not immediately released, nor was their cause of death.

An adult female was also in the home.

Police activity will be ongoing in the area through the night and into the morning hours.

A suspect was arrested after the California Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle on Interstate 80 at West El Camino around midnight Thursday, according to CBS13.

"The officers are absolutely impacted, along with the firefighters, and certainly the family, the neighbours", he said.

Speaking to kcra, local resident, Theresa Bustamante expressed shock of news of the triple homicide. (These apartments are) so quiet.

Alina and Daniel Vertelnikov are neighbors and friends of the victims.

"We always played together".

Two of the children were students at Southport Elementary School, where guidance counselors and chaplains will be to help students, teachers and parents deal with the incident. "It just happened. It's so sad", Daniel said. He had fled the scene by the time they arrived.
