Copenhagen, Sep 21 The global number of nuclear warheads dropped previous year, but it seems China, India, North Korea and Pakistan are expanding the size of their atomic arsenals, a Swedish arms watchdog said today.

Chinese leaders were for long the North's diplomatic allies but express increasing frustration with the government of Kim Jong-un.

South Korea's meteorological agency said the quake was detected in Kilju county of Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggyeri nuclear site is located. "The depth is poorly constrained and has been held to 5 kilometers by the seismologist".

In a statement on its website, China's natural disaster administration said the quake was recorded at a depth of zero kilometers and described it as a "suspected explosion".

"There is no possibility that this could be an artificial quake", Yonhap news agency quoted a KMA official as saying.

If it is a nuclear test, the low magnitude of the natural disaster event suggests a much smaller yield compared to the September 3 hydrogen bomb test, which triggered a 6.3 magnitude seismic event.

A secondary tremor detected after that test could have been caused by the collapse of a tunnel at the mountainous site, experts said at the time.

The move prompted global condemnation, leading the UN Security Council to unanimously adopt new sanctions that include restrictions on oil shipments.

Trump warned the North Korean leader in his U.N. address on Tuesday that the United States, if threatened, would "totally destroy" his country of 26 million people.

The Sept. 3 detonation followed two intercontinental ballistic missile launches in July that brought Kim Jong Un's isolated regime a step closer to achieving its aim of being able to deploy a nuclear warhead over the continental U.S.

Trump said he had signed an executive order allowing sanctions against "individuals and companies that finance and facilitate trade with North Korea".

Russian Federation and China have both appealed for an end to the escalating rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, now in NY for a United Nations meeting, warned on Thursday that Mr Kim could consider a hydrogen bomb test of an unprecedented scale over the Pacific.

The natural disaster, which South Korea put at magnitude 3.0, was detected in Kilju county in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggyeri nuclear site is located, the official said.
