Why do we bring in someone from overseas and a lot of his songs I have heard, you would not want to play them because of the lyrics.

Macklemore has since responded to the controversy surrounding his upcoming NRL Grand Final performance, after being criticised by "angry old white dudes" for planning to perform "Same Love" in Sydney on Sunday night.

'Pink, who's one of my favourite artists, I think she's a wonderfully talented singer released a song condeming George Bush and I didn't much like that at the time, but I didn't think it should be banned from radio, ' he said.

Mr Abbott's daughter, Frances, also showed support for the same-sex marriage anthem on Instagram, saying the song was "what we need".

"The response from fans has been overwhelmingly positive - many young people are coming to the grand final just to see him".

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull appeared on Channel Ten's "The Project" to hit back and insist Macklemore should be allowed to perform the song. "The opinion that I expressed yesterday was that the NRL had made a poor call in doing what they did", Abbott told reporters when he explained his position.

Macklemore (here performing in April this year) is due to perform "Same Love" at this Sunday's NRL Grand Final.

He added: "I'm gonna go harder, I'm going to love".

With the same-sex marriage survey now underway in Australia, Macklemore's performance has attracted criticism and praise from both sides of the debate.

'I'm not sure this was meant to be a poltical statement, I think it was meant to be just more about entertainment, he's had a few mega big hits and I'll enjoy three of the four of them'.

In the recorded message, he says same-sex marriage is a recipe for division and would remove gender from all areas of society including schools.

Conservative politicians have been finding new and creative ways to freak out over sports and social issues over the last few months - even the ones who aren't from the US. If it shows support for legalising same-sex marriage, the government has promised to debate changing the law.
