Oklahoma City announced on Friday a "multi-year contract extension" has been agreed with Westbrook, reportedly the most lucrative deal in National Basketball Association history.

To say the lucrative deal is much deserved would be an understatement.

The move is also critical for new Thunder players Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, who both have player options on their deals after this season.

Westbrook is entering the final year of his current deal, which will pay him $28.5 million.

While the threat of Westbrook following Durant out the door loomed for Oklahoma City, the team was in a stronger negotiating position this time around.

The small-market Thunder took a hit when All-Star forward Kevin Durant departed as a free agent in July 2016.

Westbrook's total contract exceeds the $228 commitment the Houston Rockets gave his former Thunder teammate James Harden through 2022-23 earlier this summer.

Westbrook, 28, now has the biggest total contract in National Basketball Association history, totaling $233 million over six seasons including 2017-18.

"I am so honoured to have the opportunity to continue my career here with the Thunder".

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has agreed to a five-year, $205 million extension with the team, according to an ESPN report.

"We are extremely fortunate to have an athlete, competitor and person such as Russell wear the Thunder uniform", Presti said. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same. Amid the Thunder's despair in losing Durant, Westbrook's shorter-term commitment gave Presti and assistant GM Troy Weaver the ability to pursue the trades with in and NY to acquire George and Anthony, respectively.

Westbrook was selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft and has been named to six All-Star teams in his nine seasons.
