Can they still catch the Boston Red Sox?

The Houston Astros kept Boston's champagne on ice and also kept their own hopes for home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs alive with a 3-2 decision over the Red Sox on Friday night. If the Yankees were to win the final two games of the season and the Red Sox drop two to the Astros, the Yankees would be the AL East champions because they won the series series by taking 11 of 19 games against Boston.

The Twins will be the road team in the AL Wild Card Game, likely against the Yankees, who have clinched a playoff berth.

If Boston and NY wind up even, they will play a one-game tiebreaker Monday at Yankee Stadium for the division crown, with the loser going to the wild-card game.

The Red Sox had but one goal for the final homestand of the season: wrap up the American League East before the weekend.

Rays 7, Orioles 0: Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison homered, and host Tampa Bay sealed a third-place finish in the AL East. Longoria hit a leadoff drive in the fifth, marking his fifth straight 20-homer season and the ninth of his 10-year career.

Indians 10, White Sox 1: Jose Ramirez had three hits, including his 54th and 55th doubles of the season, and Trevor Bauer pitched six strong innings as Cleveland routed Chicago.

Four losses in five games later, we have reached DEFCON 2. Kennedy (5-13), who was 0-9 with a 6.13 ERA in 18 home starts since an August 20, 2016, victory over Minnesota, threw 86 pitches in five innings.

The Rockies reduced their NL wild-card magic number to one by crushing four home runs in a 9-1 pounding of the Dodgers.

The Indians are one game ahead of the Astros in the race for top seed in the AL with two to play. After Kyle Schwarber struck out, Happ drove his 24th home run to left. Doug Fister gave up three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Obviously, the Red Sox didn't envision Price coming out of the bullpen when they signed him to a seven-year, $217 million contract.

YANKEES 4, BLUE JAYS 0 Masahiro Tanaka struck out 15 over seven innings, his highest total since coming to the major leagues, and playoff-bound NY beat visiting Toronto to remain on the edge of contention in the AL East. Last night, they reached 880 runs for the season before any other team had as many as 850 (and when only six other teams had at least 800). Only four Red Sox have hit more. Brian Duensing (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth.

Devers had an RBI double and Dustin Pedroia an RBI groundout for the Red Sox, who couldn't erase a three-run deficit. Sometimes you go through those stretches and it's just kind of important for us to know that we've got to take it one game at a time.

Brewers 5, Cardinals 3: Chase Anderson worked into the eighth inning and Stephen Vogt knocked in three runs as Milwaukee beat St Louis.

Chad Bettis (2-4) made one of the best starts this season for the Rockies since coming back from testicular cancer and returning to the rotation on August 14, giving up four hits and one run, and retiring the final 14 batters he faced.

Kershaw is 18-4 with a league-leading 2.21 ERA. Alex Bregman was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs to lead the way.

A Yankee for nine seasons, the 37-year-old left-hander will become a free agent after the season.
