Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has reportedly suffered injured ribs after the Argentine forward was involved in a vehicle crash in Amsterdam, media in Argentina reported on Friday.

In a statement, City said Aguero was in Holland "on his day off" and Guardiola was adamant his star had done nothing wrong.

Initial reports suggest Aguero may have suffered broken ribs, which could rule him out for around two months.

"I don't like to train everyday because I think players need to rest mentally and physically, and they can enjoy their lives".

Asked on the timeline for his return, Guardiola said: "I don't know, I am not a doctor. Fortunately he'll come back and recover as soon as possible".

"I don't know what the supporters think. Exactly how many days he will have off, I don't know right now". If they decide to go there, they decide to go there.

The global break follows City's match against Chelsea.

Dutch police said the accident happened on Amsterdam's De Boelelaan (street). Aguero took a photo with the singer and posted it to his Instagram account on Thursday, hours before the crash.

Aguero also shared an image on the social media site thanking Maluma for the invitation to the concert. "Everyone @ Independiente is with you in this hard moment".

The Aguero blow comes after City discovered this week that France defender Benjamin Mendy ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in last weekend's win over Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old is now chasing City's all-time scoring record, lying just one strike behind the mark set by Eric Brook, who netted 177 times for the club between 1927 and 1940.

City captain Vincent Kompany is also some way off returning from injury, despite being named in Belgium's squad.

"No way. He didn't make one training session with us since a month ago", he said.

City faces Chelsea at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Premier League action at Stamford Bridge in London.

The global break follows the weekend's Premier League matches with Aguero in Argentina's squad for their last two World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador on October 5 and 10.
