Another probable reason why Cristiano didn't start in Andorra is the fact that he was one yellow card away from being suspended for Tuesday's huge final group game.

The four-time Ballon d'Or victor was heavily involved when the second did arrive moments later, though, playing a cross to the far post which was knocked back across goal for Silva to tuck home from close range.

The game is set to be one of the biggest mismatches in this round of the qualifiers as Portugal defeated Andorra 6-0 the last time the two teams met.

Poland are now leading group E with three points over Denmark and a point in their final game against third-placed Montenegro on Sunday will see them secure their direct ticket for Russian Federation. Now, they are placed in 2nd position after playing nine matches in group B.

"I thought hard, I pondered", Santos said. "I thought, well, (Cristiano) Ronaldo did not train 100 per cent in two of the days of work (prior to the match)".

While Portugal was laboring to beat Andorra 2-0, using its superstar as a substitute, Group B leader Switzerland's 5-2 win over visiting Hungary ran its own win streak to nine.

"There were many factors that led to this decision".

"It wasn't really about the risk of getting a yellow card because he's an experienced player".

Portugal has been one of the better teams in these UEFA qualifiers now second in Group B with 21 points and a goal differential of 24.

"I tried to administer the situation and do what was best. Whether it was questionable or not, we ended up winning and that's what matters".

Portugal chartered a specially adapted air force plane to fly to an aerodrome near the stadium in order to avoid the three-hour coach journey most teams have to face. In the first half, we lacked momentum. "I had to bring on Ronaldo at half-time and in the end, we won the way we wanted to".

It was also Ronaldo's 79th goal for his country, lifting him up to joint-third in the all-time list of worldwide goalscorers, and he came close to extending his tally further with a long-range strike in the final five minutes which needed to be saved.
