Though the Amber Alert has "timed out", the search for the child continues. Fifteen minutes later, when Mathews returned to check on the girl, his daughter was gone, Sgt. Kevin Perlich told the Houston Chronicle.

However, her parents did not report her missing until 8 a.m., police said. Mathews took his daughter outside to discipline her after she refused to drink her milk and told her to stand by a tree in their backyard, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The girl, Sherin Mathews, has development issues and limited verbal communication skills.

Wesley Mathews was arrested on Saturday and charged with Abandoning or Endangering a Child. He was released late Sunday after posting $250,000 bond, Perlich told the Chronicle. The neighbor also said that roughly 18 months ago, the couple adopted Sherin from India.

Police have described her as Asian, 3 feet tall and about 22 pounds.
