At least one person is dead and two are seriously injured in wildfires north of San Francisco, The Associated Press reported Monday.

Fires in Mendocino County have triggered the closure of Redwood Valley and School Way from Hwy 101.

"The Fountaingrove Inn across the street from the mobile home park burned, as did the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, a Kmart store, a McDonald's, an Arby's, an Applebee's and a Mountain Mike's Pizza".

Evacuation orders are also in effect in an area north of the town of Oroville, where the Cherokee Fire has burned 1,00 acres. He said firefighters are concentrating on saving lives rather than battling the blazes.

The only positive news is that fire officials have said that the high winds of last night have died down for the time being, but they are expected to kick up again around sundown, meaning that fast containment is vital. The Atlas Fire south of Lake Berryessa off of Atlas Peak Road has burned at least 25,000 acres while the Partrick-Carneros Fire, which ignited west of Napa, has torched roughly 2,000 acres.

The immediate task for emergency crews was helping people evacuate as the fires roared toward residential areas.

"There are fires burning in a handful of areas, but Napa is the primary focus because it started there first", Jourdan said. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department issued a notice to residents to expect a strong smell of smoke from the fires.

The National Weather Service said winds of 35 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour had occurred Sunday night.

There was no cause provided for the Napa and Sonoma fires, nor information on any damage or injury estimates.

Authorities have implemented forced evacuations in several rural neighborhoods and worked to clear out hospitals and senior centers in northwestern Santa Rosa. Those impacted by the fire can also check the Cal Fire website or Nixle for further updates on evacuations.

Additional evacuations were issued Monday morning for areas around Santa Rosa, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. Residents and businesses in the area were advised to evacuate immediately. One of the blazes in Sonoma County was at 300 acres and has been dubbed the Nuns Fire.

If O'Gorman hadn't been coming home from work to wake her family, "we would have been in the house trapped", she said. "We are not on scene yet and haven't been able to determine the best evacuation route".

"I'm probably not going to", she says.

The swath is known as wine country.
