Rahul Gandhi to soon take over as Congress president, says Sonia

The clamour for Rahul Gandhi to take over as party president has grown over the past few weeks.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is on a two-day visit to poll bound state of Gujarat to campaign for BJP, seems pretty confident of the party's win in state assembly elections.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday cleared the air regarding party vice president and his son Rahul Gandhi's elevation and said he will soon take over as Congress chief.

"Uttar Pradesh's Rai Barely and Amethi are being represented by three generations of the Gandhi family, but in the last 14 years, Rahul Gandhi never bothered about construction of collectorate in his parliamentary constituency Amethi", said Adityanath.

Rahul Gandhi posted a series of tweets wherein he targeted the Prime Minister over the latter's home state Gujarat. During a recent overseas tour, Rahul while replying to a querry, had consented on becoming the Congress president. "Why don't they just go away?" "That is why when terrorist like Ishrat Jahan was killed by security forces in Gujarat then Rahul Gandhi came to support her", said Adityanath", Adityanath said.

"The Congress is not supporters of development, but of devastation". Rahul, who was also present at the event, refused to speak on the development.

Political strategists feel that Mr Gandhi's visits to temples are an effort to counter the BJP's Hindutva plank.

Virtually gasping for survival in the country's politically most vibrant state, UP Congress Committee (UPCC) sees a hope of reviving the outfit by elevating Rahul Gandhi as the party's national president.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) - the party's highest decision-making body - is expected to decide on the dates of election for the new president soon.

The elevation of Mr Gandhi has been in the works for a long time, with party leaders saying that the time has now come for him to take over as party chief. He has been the party vice president since 2013.
