Fire department reminds people to change smoke detector batteries

St. Lawrence County residents are set to turn their clocks back tonight, and the Firemen's Association of NY is urging people to check their smoke alarm batteries.

Smoke alarms should be replaced when they are ten years old, and carbon monoxide detectors when they are five.

"Not only do we want you to change the battery, but we want you to look on the back and see what the manufacture date is", he said.

The NFPA reports that working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. On pitched ceilings, they should be installed at least four inches from the highest point.

"Working smoke alarms are the single most important tool in getting out alive during a fire", said Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Roger Parrino Sr.

According to Covey, having an updated smoke alarm can be the difference in saving someone's life if there's a fire.

Place a smoke alarm on the ceiling of every level of your home and both inside and outside bedrooms.

"They will set up a date and a time to come to your home". There's no way to predict when a fire will occur, so even one night without an operational smoke alarm can be risky. California has been recognizing daylight saving time since 1949. Make sure that your space heater has tip over protection.
