Garth Brooks took home top honors at the 51st Country Music Association Awards - despite raising some eyebrows earlier in the evening for lip-synching his performance.

"Getting this presented to me by the entertainer of a lifetime, I thank you", Brooks said. Let's all raise a the band and crew.

"We made a game-time call on whether to sing to a track or lip-sync", Brooks said. "My voice just isn't going anywhere, and we wanted to represent country music the best we can".

He explained that he was under the weather, and had already played 12 shows in just ten days. "The track, even if we're lip-syncing, is as live as it gets".

The social media backlash came so fast and furious that Brooks readily admitted to the deception by the time he met with reporters backstage following the awards show in Nashville.

Brooks, who won his first CMA for Entertainer of the Year in 1991, noted that he's now having some of the best years of his career while doing it on his own terms. "Sleep", he said. "I just think we're all going to sleep for a while". We're all exhausted, but at the same time you're having the best time of your life and you don't want it to end.

Garth Brooks didn't live up to the title of Entertainer of the Year at Wednesday's 2017 CMA Awards.
