The Patriots claimed Bennett off waivers on Thursday, one day after he was waived by the Green Bay Packers with the designation that he failed to disclose a physical condition. As Rapoport noted, there is little risk in the Patriots claiming him, as if his shoulder is an issue this year, they could also put him on the Injured Reserve. He did not play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions.

Bennett played with the Patriots during the 2016 season helping them to their fifth Super Bowl.

Bennett made headlines earlier this season when he raised his fist and then sat down on the players bench during the national anthem.

Martellus Bennett is returning to the New England Patriots.

With Green Bay, he hauled in 24 catches for 233 yards and no touchdowns. Bennett appears ready to tough it out and play for the Patriots.

Said tight end Richard Rodgers: "I think we know where we're trying to go". He finished that season with 55 receptions for 702 yards and seven touchdown grabs.

McCarthy said he did not talk to Bennett about retiring, and he wouldn't speculate on whether there was any connection between Bennett's Instagram post, the injury and the team's sagging fortunes without Aaron Rodgers.

"After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next eight games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", he wrote. These next games are for you.

But offseason tight end acquisition Dwayne Allen has underwhelmed, and has yet to catch a pass this season. Kendricks caught a career-high 50 passes for the Rams last season.
