A woman in Duncan, Oklahoma was jailed for 10 years in an incest case on Tuesday, 7 November, after she pleaded guilty to marrying her own biological mother.

Misty Spann, 26, pleaded guilty to illegally marrying 44-year-old Patricia Spann and was sentenced in Stepens County District Court, according to Tulsa World.

Department of Human Services investigators discovered the illegal relationship in August 2016 while investigating the children who were inside the Spanns' home.

Incest is punishable by up to 10 years in prison in Oklahoma.

Patricia Spann told the investigator that she lost custody of Misty Spann and her other two children, who were put in the care of their grandparents when they were children.

When she reconnected with Misty Spann, they "hit it off", Patricia Spann allegedly told the welfare worker.

The 44-year-old also got married to her son in 2008 in Comanche County, however he filed for an annulment after 15 months. The mother, who reportedly was once married to her biological son as well, is set to appear in court in January 2018 to face her charges.

She says she only consented to getting married after her mother convinced her it was legally OK, saying she consulted three attorneys. "She forced my sister into this, there's a lot of people that know it", he told KWSO. The marriage was annulled in 2010 after her son described it as incestuous, Tulsa World reported.

"If that's what you want that's on you, but none of us kids want that".

There's a scientific explanation for why couples like Patricia and Misty Spann get together, despite being related as mother and daughter. When she and Misty were reunited, Patricia allegedly said they "hit it off".

The marriage - like the one previously with Cody Spann - was annulled last month at the behest of Misty, who said she was induced "by fraud to enter the marriage".

Patricia Spann said she didn't think they violated any laws because her name was no longer on Misty Spann's birth certificate. The Spann children were raised by their paternal grandmother.
